Based on histo\u00adrical photo\u00adgraphs from the coll\u00adec\u00adtion of the Sieger\u00adl\u00e4nder Heimat- und Geschichts\u00adverein (the Sieger\u00adland society of local history) and the Aktives Museum S\u00fcdwest\u00adfalen (Active Museum of South West\u00adphalia), the two- and three-dimen\u00adsional video animation pieces together the ruins of the Siegen synagogue. At the end of the instal\u00adla\u00adtion, the building reappears before the spec\u00adta\u00adtors\u2018 eyes as it was from 1904 to 1938 before its destruc\u00adtion. It is projected onto the wall of the elevated bunker built on the synagogue site in 1941. The striking images are accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by histo\u00adrical and modern recor\u00addings of synagogal chants.<\/div>\n

The premiere of the first virtual recon\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of a synagogue in Germany is intended to recall, on a repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive basis, the more than 1400 synago\u00adgues and prayer houses that were destroyed during the so-called \u201eReichs\u00adkris\u00adtall\u00adnacht\u201c in November 1938. The unique event intends to evoke a variety of emotions in the viewers, both those on-site and those worldwide watching via live broadcast on the Internet \u2013 the virtual recon\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the Siegen synagogue will reach not only their minds but also their hearts and souls. For some viewers, the event will be their first-ever encounter with Jewish culture and Judaism.<\/div>\n

It is simul\u00adta\u00adneously also related to the present and the future \u2013 as former German Chan\u00adcellor Helmut Schmidt once said: Instead of talking about the \u201epresent of the past,\u201c one should rather talk about the \u201efuture of the past.\u201c In this sense, the Siegen project is also directed towards the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The artists involved in the virtual recon\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the Siegen synagogue stand with their art and with their lives for the fact that coexis\u00adtence between nations and religions is possible: The project is a German-Polish-Hungarian and, at the same time, Jewish-Christian co-produc\u00adtion. The artists come from countries in which natio\u00adna\u00adlist-auto\u00adcratic govern\u00adments are trans\u00adforming democracy into autho\u00adri\u00adta\u00adrian forms of govern\u00adment, as in Hungary and Poland; and from countries where anti-Semitism permeates all strata of society, as in Germany. The project is thus also intended as a warning and reminder against growing hostility towards Jews.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
