The design of the menorah, which is one of the central symbols of Judaism, can be traced back to Klaus Dietermann (1949\u20132017), among others. The remote area now becomes more easily acces\u00adsible and expe\u00adri\u00adences a boost in economic and social modernization.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201eFrom 1867\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Jewish merchant and trader families move from the neigh\u00adboring regions of the Sauerland and Witt\u00adgen\u00adstein to the growing indus\u00adtrial city of Siegen. Seven families are recorded in 1870, including the merchant Meier Leser Stern\u2019s family. Stern is the central figure of the Siegen Jewish community until his death in&nbsp;1924.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1871\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The Siegen Jews acquire a plot of land on the Linden\u00adberg for a cemetery and establish a private religious school, which was reco\u00adgnized by the state in&nbsp;1885.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1881\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The Berlin court preacher Adolf Stoecker, one of the leading figures of the anti-Semitic movement, delivers a program\u00admatic speech in the Siegen Hammer\u00adh\u00fctte. From 1881 to 1893 and from 1898 to 1908, he repres\u00adents the consti\u00adtuency of Siegen-Witt\u00adgen\u00adstein-Bieden\u00adkopf in the Reichstag. The Sieger\u00adland becomes a strong\u00adhold of hostility towards Jews.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1882\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The teacher Felix Coblenz (1863\u20131923) begins his service in Siegen and receives \u201ethe conces\u00adsion to open a private Israelite school in Siegen.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1884\/85\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>In March, the Siegen synagogue community is founded. One year later, 127 Jews are regis\u00adtered in Siegen and 107&nbsp;in the district area, but most maintain only loose contacts with the Siegen community.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1889\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Meyer Lili\u00aden\u00adfeld (1866\u20131908) succeeds Felix Coblenz as a teacher and cultural official of the Jewish community of Siegen. He worked in the city until&nbsp;1897.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1891\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>On March 25, the Jewish community\u2019s chairman, Meier Leser Stern, acquires a plot of land \u201eaufm Ober\u00adgraben\u201c for the cons\u00adtruc\u00adtion of a synagogue.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1897\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Simon Gr\u00fcnewald (1870\u20131939) is appointed the third and last teacher, preacher, and cantor of the Siegen synagogue community. After the closure of the Jewish school, he was a teacher at the Protes\u00adtant city school in Siegen until his reti\u00adre\u00adment in 1930. He was active for the community until his flight in June 1939. Gr\u00fcnewald is, next to Meier Leser Stern, the second central perso\u00adna\u00adlity of the Sieger\u00adland Jewish community.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1900\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Jewish women from Siegen found the Israe\u00adli\u00adti\u00adscher Frau\u00aden\u00adverein (Jewish Women\u2019s Asso\u00adcia\u00adtion), which addresses the commu\u00adni\u00adty\u2019s social needs.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1902\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>On September 24, Meier Leser Stern submits the appli\u00adca\u00adtion for a building permit for a synagogue to the district govern\u00adment in Arnsberg. On December 9, he hands in the design sketch of the Prussian govern\u00adment and building councilor Eduard F\u00fcrstenau.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1903\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>On July 23, the foun\u00adda\u00adtion stone for the Siegen synagogue is laid. Already on October 16, the <em>Richtfest<\/em> (topping-out ceremony) can be celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1904\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The Siegen synagogue is offi\u00adci\u00adally inau\u00adgu\u00adrated on July 22 with a ceremony that attracts national attention. However, unlike in other cities, neither the mayor nor the clergymen of the Protes\u00adtant and Catholic churches came to the dedi\u00adca\u00adtion ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1912\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The Jewish community estab\u00adlishes a burial ground in the municipal Hermels\u00adbach cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1914\u20131918\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>32 Jewish men from the Sieger\u00adland fight for the German Empire in World War I, eight of them die on the battlefields.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1919\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>As ever\u00ady\u00adwhere else, the anti-Jewish slogan \u201eEver\u00ady\u00adwhere her face is grinning, except in the trenches\u201c can be read and heard in the Sieger\u00adland. Teacher Gr\u00fcnewald addressed the public with a protest note in the Siegener Zeitung on January 27,&nbsp;1919.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1920\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of June, the night before the unveiling of a memorial plaque for the Jewish victims of the war, the synagogue is smeared with anti-Semitic slogans.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1924\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Meier Leser Stern, the founding chairman and honorary chairman of the Siegen synagogue community since 1921, dies on October 15 at the age of&nbsp;90.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1932\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>In the last free elections in November 1932, the NSDAP receives 56.1 percent of the vote in Sieger\u00adland \u2013 the average in the German Reich is 33.1 percent.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1938\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Around noon on November 10, Siegen SA and SS men set fire to the Siegen synagogue. A large number of onlookers behave apathe\u00adti\u00adcally. The men of the Siegen Jewish community are arrested and deported to the Sach\u00adsen\u00adhausen concen\u00adtra\u00adtion camp \u2013 many of them will not recover from the abuse after their release.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1939\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The last of the 24 Jewish companies and busi\u00adnesses in Siegen is \u201eAryanized\u201c and taken over by mostly Siegen busi\u00adnessmen at a bargain price.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1940\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>After the Siegen Jews had to pay the costs of demo\u00adli\u00adshing the ruins of their synagogue, they also have to sell the property far below its value. Almost exactly 36&nbsp;years to the day after the synago\u00adgue\u2019s dedi\u00adca\u00adtion \u2013 on July 20, 1940 \u2013 the city of Siegen acquires the property and builds an air raid shelter there.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1941\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>Until the ban on Jewish emigra\u00adtion on October 23, 1941, about forty percent of the Jews of Sieger\u00adland leave their homeland.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1942\/43\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>The last Jews from the Siegen district are deported to the death camps: 40 deported to Zamo\u015b\u0107 near Belzec on April 28, 1942, 24 to There\u00adsi\u00aden\u00adstadt on July 27, 1942, and 15 to Auschwitz on February 28,&nbsp;1943.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1959\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>On March 10, the Society for Christian-Jewish Coope\u00adra\u00adtion Sieger\u00adland e.V. is founded in Siegen. Hugo Herrmann (1898\u20131993), the only Jew from Siegen to settle in Siegen again for a longer period after the Shoah, is elected executive chairman.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=\u201e1965\u201c _builder_version=\u201e4.9.7\u201c _module_preset=\u201edefault\u201c hover_enabled=\u201e0\u201c sticky_enabled=\u201e0\u201c]<\/p>\n<p>On November 9, the <em>Reichs\u00adpo\u00adgrom\u00adnacht<\/em> (Night of Broken Glass) of 1938 is comme\u00admo\u00adrated for the first time at the site of the destroyed Siegen synagogue.
